How can small and medium-sized enterprises attract, develop, and successfully retain employees over the long term? This key question was the focus of the 3rd Company Forum organized by the Federal Association of Small and Medium-Sized Businesses (BVMW), which took place at our facility this month.
As hosts, we were pleased to join forces with the Klein-Nöh Carpentry and Furniture Workshop, the Regional Job Network (RJV), and the City of Netphen to host an evening of exchange and networking. Numerous representatives from companies, institutions, and regional organizations took the opportunity to share experiences, discuss current challenges, and gain new insights to apply to their own work.
Employee retention as a key priority for the future
The competition for qualified professionals is posing increasingly significant challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises. Attracting employees is only the first step. It is equally crucial to create a supportive work environment, highlight opportunities for growth, and foster a corporate culture in which people feel valued and comfortable in the long term.
At the corporate forum, it became clear that successful employee retention cannot be reduced to individual measures or short-term offers. It begins with day-to-day interactions—through mutual respect, open communication, and a reliable work environment. The opportunity to take on responsibility and actively shape the development of one’s own company also plays an important role.
Practical insights and personal experiences
The evening focused on practical insights and personal experiences from the regional business community. Participants shared stories from their own companies and spoke openly about the issues currently on their minds: How can we attract new employees? What do employees expect from their employers? How can companies highlight their strengths as employers? And what role do leadership, corporate culture, and regional networking play?
The personal exchange provided different perspectives on a shared topic. After all, the circumstances and challenges can vary greatly depending on the industry and company size. At the same time, it became clear that many companies face similar challenges and can benefit from one another.
The Business Forum provided an ideal platform for this. Companies, institutions, and regional partners engaged in dialogue, established new contacts, and developed joint ideas. It also became clear how important strong local networks are. They create short lines of communication, foster cooperation, and help further develop the region as an attractive place to work and do business.
Employee retention, therefore, does not begin only with the introduction of specific programs. It also arises from mutual understanding, collaboration, and a shared vision of the future. Those who learn from one another and tackle challenges together can develop sustainable solutions and make targeted use of their own strengths.
Responsibility for the Region
As a medium-sized company, Brühl is aware of its responsibility to the region. Engaging with other companies, institutions, and partners is a key part of jointly developing viable prospects and strengthening the regional economy.
The BVMW’s 3rd Business Forum demonstrated just how valuable in-person meetings and open discussions are. The evening provided not only an opportunity for professional insights, but also for making new connections, engaging in trusting conversations, and looking beyond the boundaries of one’s own company.
